Yang claimed gold with an Olympic record score of 251.8, edging ahead of Russian Anastasiia Galashina on 251.1 and Switzerland's Nina Christen on 230.6.

People’s Republic of China’s YANG Qian won the first gold medal of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, holding her nerve to clinch the women’s 10m air rifle title.

The 21-year-old shooter edged out ROC’s Anastasiia Galashina with an Olympic record score of 251.8. Nina Christen of Switzerland took the bronze medal.

Competing in her first Olympics, Yang, as the first champion of the 2020 Games, was awarded her medal by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach.

With no medallist from Rio featuring at Tokyo 2020, the door was open for a new Olympic champion in the women’s 10m air rifle.

Yang held his nerve with a final shot of 9.8 to hold off her rival, who finished just 0.7 behind.

While Yang and Galashina finished the qualification round in sixth and eighth respectively, Jeanette Hegg Duestad of Norway was the leader having shot an Olympic record in qualifying of 632.9. She finished outside of the medals in fourth place.

After a close final, France’s Oceanne Muller, Mary Carolynn Tucker of the USA, Republic of Korea’s KWON Eunji and PARK Heemoon finished in positions five to eight.
