Valve has just shaken up the entire esports world by revealing Counter-Strike 2, the update that brings Counter-Strike onto the Source 2 engine, and some lucky players can start playing now. The Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test is effectively a beta before the full release this summer and this is how you can download and play it right now.
There is some strict criteria to get into the Limited Test and early reactions seem to be that a lot of people have missed out, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait a while longer yet before you can get your hands on Counter-Strike 2. But those that do get into the Limited Test will be among the first in the world to experience the new era of Counter-Strike.
Unfortunately for many, to be eligible to play the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test you must have been selected by Valve, who made the decisions based on factors such as recent playtime on Valve official servers, trust factor, and Steam account standing. You’ll also not be eligible to play Counter-Strike 2 if you have any kind of VAC ban on your account from CS:GO.
If you have been selected you will receive a notification on the main menu of CS:GO. When you see that invitation select “ENROLL” and Counter-Strike 2 will begin to download. When the download is complete launch CS:GO and select the “Limited Test” option to play the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test.
Once you have downloaded the game you will be able to experience the new Counter-Strike 2 features such as reworked maps, dynamic smokes and zero tick rate servers. However, you’ll only be playing with other people in the Limited Test, so you will seemingly be unable to go back to playing regular CS:GO.
All your skins and cosmetics will be available in the Limited Test, but for now you will only be able to play Deathmatch and Unranked Competitive matchmaking on Dust2. However as the test continues more maps and game modes will be added.
If you didn’t manage to get into the first wave of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test then fear not, Valve plans to add more people up until release in the summer, so you will have quite a few chances to get involved. For now your best bet is to boot up Twitch and try to find a streamer who got in, as there are no restrictions on creating content from Counter-Strike 2.
