Pana Sankranti also known as Mesha Sankranti, Maha Vishubha Sankranti and Meru Sankranti marks the Odias New Year. The fist day of the traditional solar month of Mesha is celebrated as Odia new year. This falls on the Purnimanta system of lunar month Baisakha on the Indian national system, i.e. the 24th day of Chaitra. It therefore falls on 13/14 April every year on the Gregorian calendar.
The sun completely rests on the equator (visubha rekha) only on two occasions- “Mesha Sankranti” and “Tula Sankranti”. On these two days, the duration of day and night remains the same. After this, the sun moves towards the north direction. As India is located to the north of the equator, hence, from the first movement of the sun from Mesha Sankranti, Odisha marks it New Year.
Pana Sankranti is what Vishu is for Kerala, Vaisakhi for Punjab, Pohela Boishakh for West Bengal and Bihu is for Assam. It is only the rituals and vibrancy that vary, the reason for celebration remains almost the same across the country. According to the tradition of Odia, Pan Sankranti is considered the birthday of the Hindu deity Hanuman.
The festival is celebrated with visits to Shiva, Shakti, or Hanuman temples, as the day is also considered to be the birthday of Hanuman. People take baths in rivers or major pilgrimage centers to have a new start in their life. Pana(A chilled sweet mango-milk-yoghurt-coconut drink) is integral part of the festival. An earthen pot is filled with a special sweet drink called Pana and hung over the top of a Tulsi tree or plant with a hole at the bottom of it so that drops of Pana drip over the Tulsi plant, which signifies the rainy season.
This day is observed to aware everyone that summer has come and keep yourself hydrated by Pana or water or any liquid things. Odia new year symbolizes the spirit of integrity, brotherhood and camaraderie among people irrespective of caste and creed.
