Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is a major festival of Punjab and Haryana that marks the beginning of the harvest season. This year, Baisakhi will be celebrated on Thursday, April 14. It is believed that the significance of Vaisakhi dates back to March 30, 1699, when Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Sikh Guru, established the Khalsa order. Many Hindus also believe it to be the beginning of the Hindu New Year – although this is not universally accepted.
Today, Vaisakhi has grown from a simple celebration of harvest season to a culturally significant festival, celebrated by hundreds of thousands of people in and outside India.
