Displaying rare commitment for the environment, the 10 ft tall idol of the Mumbai Cha Peshwa in Vile Parle will be immersed in an artificial tank nearby instead of Juhu Chowpatty.Its parent Bal Gopal Mitra Mandal has carved this Ganesh seated atop Garuda from banana tree fibre and tissue paperMandal chief Vijay Naikude said, “We have been experimenting with eco-friendly material ever since former mayor Shubha Raul requested us in 2008. This year we bought banana tree branches that are used in auspicious rituals, pulped and dry powdered the fibre, then mixed it with tissue paper to carve the idol. We will reuse the decor for Navratra, and only immerse our idol today.”

The “largest idol in Maharashtra”, the 38 ft likeness of Lord Parshuram is the Mumbaicha Maharaja of Khetwadi 11th Lane. It has arrived at Girgaum to head to Chowpatty.
